Let’s explore Ms. Husseini’s strategic leadership in addressing legal challenges:
Building a Career in the Legal and Business Sectors
Ms. Husseini always aspired to be a lawyer, a passion she discovered at 12. Law was a natural path for her, as many family members, both paternal and maternal, were lawyers or judges, which exposed her to the field early on. The deep wounds and sense of injustice she experienced at a very young age—she was 6 years old when the 1967 war broke out—profoundly impacted her life. She sought tools to empower herself after much loss and suffering, and law became her chosen path.
She was a determined child who excelled in school. She was very ambitious and aimed to reach great heights. Due to the occupation following the 1967 War, there were no colleges in Palestine where she could pursue higher education. Therefore, upon graduating in 1979, she studied in the United States.
Her parents supported her, which was forward-thinking, given their conservative culture and family background. They allowed an 18-year-old girl to study in the US, far from home. It was tough for her parents, especially her mother, to let go of their only daughter (she has three brothers). Still, they highly valued education and provided her with the opportunity that paved the way for her to become the person she is today.
As the only girl in a family of four children, Ms. Husseini was independent and had a mind of her own. Her schooling in Jerusalem at the Rosary Sisters School influenced her striving for excellence and discipline.
Her time in the US taught her self-reliance, strength, and self-confidence. Throughout her studies, she worked part-time to earn spending money. During her JD studies, she worked full-time to support herself and pay her tuition, studying at night. Her demanding schedule taught her time management and prioritization.
History was on her side. As soon as she finished her legal studies and was taking the Bar in 1993, the Israeli-Palestinian peace process was launched. It was a time of great political promise for Palestine, so she joined the Palestinian team for the Negotiations. Initially, she was a legal team member and eventually became the Head of the Legal Committee for the Negotiations.
This opened many opportunities as a legal advisor and an active member in establishing the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) public institutions and ministries, the courts, and the Legislative Council (the parliament), among others. She focused on the commercial and business side of things as the PA relied on the public-private sector relationship to develop the economy. This involvement included advising investors on establishing holding companies, telecom providers, the stock market, investment companies, real estate development companies, and import businesses.
Adapting to Changes in the Legal Field
As Managing Partner, Ms. Husseini oversees a team of six lawyers and two administrative staff, combining leadership, strategic planning, and administrative duties. Her responsibilities include shaping the firm’s vision and mission, making high-level decisions, and creating a positive culture. She focuses on business development by building strong client relationships, implementing marketing strategies to attract new clients, and driving profitability.
Financially, she manages the budgeting process and monitors expenses. She leads recruitment efforts to attract talent, implements development programs, and oversees performance evaluations. Additionally, she oversees the firm’s day-to-day operations, ensuring the necessary technological infrastructure and compliance with legal requirements are in place.
Her role requires a blend of legal expertise and business acumen. She strives to ensure the firm’s success in a competitive market. Since founding the firm in 1997, she has adapted to changes in the legal field. Initially, there were no law schools in Palestine, but now there are five, and competition with firms is strong. Her goal is always to stay ahead by anticipating the future, particularly with her long-standing support for the two-state solution.
